Swim Program Highlights

Evening Endurance Swim classes are held Monday and Wednesday evenings for five weeks beginning June 14th. These classes are for swimmers who have completed up through Level IV of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program and want to improve their strokes and endurance. Many teens continue swimming to stay in shape for high school teams and/or to prepare for additional water safety or lifeguarding courses.

Morning Swim Classes are for children who are four years of age or older on June 14th. Classes are held four mornings a week, Monday through Thursday, for four weeks and follow the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum.

Sail Program Highlights

This year we will start off the week of June 14th with a week of race clinics to get a jump on putting together teams for I-LYA Junior Race Week and to prepare more racers for Saturday regatta travel. Race Clinic details are available below (updated 5/27/2010), including a tentative schedule. Our Learn-to-Sail program will then run for four weeks beginning June 21st. Hopefully, this four week format will make it easier to host grandchildren and avoid conflicts with spring sports, school, and camps. To make up for the lost days, we plan on increasing class length to improve time on the water.

Our program has averaged 45 participants each year over the last few years. We try to offer something for everyone. Our youngest sailors, aged eight to eleven, usually start out in our Opti Green class with other beginner sailors. Older first time sailors are welcomed into our Recreational Sailing class where, sailing with their peers, they quickly learn the basics and more. Returning sailors are grouped with an eye toward skill level and age. As their skills improve, interested sailors can choose to join the Race Team and travel off-island to compete against other area youth.

A new one week race clinic to be held the week of June 14th will provide a jumpstart for this year’s racers. Participation in this clinic is highly recommended for sailors who want to race. Race Team members who travel to regattas will be assessed additional fees and/or must commit to additional fundraising to cover the cost of coaching, travel, and regatta registrations. For sailors interested in racing, the 2010 Traveler Series racing schedule will be available online when finalized. Just follow the Inter-Lake Yachting Association link and click on Juniors.
